03 LT 80 Hard starting and oil leak on flywheel
#1
Hello. New to the forum but, I have been reading posts for several days. I just bought an 03 LT80 and my daughter has been riding for 2 weeks. It is always hard to start when first attempted. I usually need to use the choke and open the throttle. Once started it runs and idles great until it is shut off then it starts the same way. It always start though. I have not had the carb off but, I did check the compression and it showed 135 psi. I did notice there was oil around the engine cover and took it apart. Looks like oil was collecting at the bottom of the side cover under the flywheel. Crank Seal? Is there a compression test for the bottom end? With a crank seal problem would it run OK? Is this a common problem? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the ATV Connection forums.
Seals "usually" suck air if bad, not blow out.
I'd expect a blown base gasket before the seals. There may not be a problem as far as the oil goes.
Give the carb a good cleaning. Remove both jets and clean.
Sounds like a pilot jet is plugged.
Compression is too good for a blown head gasket.
Lets go from there.

I have an eton 90 that is leaking oil in same place. When we got the flywheel and stator off, you could see where it was leaking, the tube that runs down from oil tank and into next to the stator. That itty bitty finger clamp looked loose so we take it off and insoect hose, it looks just fine, but we trimmed off the end of hose, tightened the clamp and added a ziptie as well, and now it leaks more than it did before we jacked with it!!
