sportsman 335 upgrades?
#1
I have a friend that has a sportsman 335 4x4. It is a little too weak in power for him. Is there anything that he could do to add power like a cluth kit, or air filter to increase power. Or should he start looking for a bigger atv. The atv rides very nice but is just lacking power in the mud and that is even with the stock tires. Any help would be appreciated.

The simplest, most cost effective mod I believe you can make to a Polaris to up the power is to change the primary spring in the front clutch pulley.
The two most common ones to change to seem to be the white or green. I have a 400 Xplorer, which I felt needed a bit more zip (mainly because my brother was always outrunning me with his Xpress) so I tried both. The green spring allowed me to wheelie in High range just by pegging the throttle. Didn't have to stand up, lean back, or anything. Just find a spot with good enough traction. Set up that way, it wheelied in High as easily as it did in Low stock. I found it to be too much for my riding style (low range wheelied @ a big half throttle) so I went to the white spring which seemed to about split the difference. Niether spring change affected top speed.
Now the best part - the springs are under $20 each & can be swapped in about 15-20 minutes (half hour if you never had the belt cover off before) and only take common hand tools.
There are several posts referring to these sort of spring changes. Try searching the archives for things with green spring, white spring, or 325 power boost in the title. Good luck.

If it is in good shape..trade it it on a SP500. My inlaws have both and there is a great difference in power and performance. This is only my opinion though.
EBS, much more cc's = power, bigger tires plus all the new fixes for 2001...

I have a 00" 335. I also found it lacked power. I put k&n air filter and a supertrapp IDS exhaust on it. It helped bottom and midrange alot. Going to put the white spring in next. Cost for the filter and exhaust was about $300.
