2006 Sportsman 500 EFI Question -- New to forum
#1
New to the forum...thanks in advance!
Just a quick question. I'm buying an '06 500 Sportsman this week, and I have a quick question. I've been working with the local dealer in my area (nice guys so far). When test driving it, I noticed a slight delay in movement, and a "click" noise (sounded like the transmission) when accelerating after placing in gear.
When giving it gas after shifting into forward or reverse, there is a slight delay, then I hear a click where the engine/transmission grabs. When stopping via brakes, it doesn't seem to do it again when accelerating the next time (without shifting...only seems to do it when accelerating the 1st time after shifting in to gear).
Dealership said that is normal, and that it is the EBS disengaging...but I want to make sure I am getting a good machine from the get go.
I rode a new (not sure if '06 or '07) Sportsman 700 and did not notice it on that machine. When I ask him about it, he said the 700 has a different transmission than the 500...and it was normal.
Sound right?
Also, what are the major things to watch out for on these machines? Common or known issues?
Thanks!

my 700 makes alot of clicking, this is normal, there generally is a brief delay from throttle to cluch engagement. the sp 500 ho is a great machine, time tested, 2 friends of my have them, no major problems, many miles. you can do a search on this forum and get alot more info. good luck.

Thanks for the quick update! I am excited...these seem like awesome machines. I've had older model Suzuki's and a Honda (86 model Foretrax)...this one seems to ride great and have a lot of power.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

It sounds like the tranny isn't getting into gear when shifting, then goes in when a little throttle applied. You are right, the machines are great.
Good luck with the 500, and welcome to the forum.

My wife has that exact machine. No clicking noise, but she was complaining about the delay and "grabbing" when accelerating from a stop. It's at the dealer now, and their service tech said his own machine was doing the same thing. Turns out her clutch was starting to engage around 2400 RPM's instead of the ~1600-1700 he feels is proper. He changed the weights in the clutch (to a heavier set) to bring down the engagement speed and says now it's as smooth as butter during takeoff. We're having them do the same thing to my wife's SP500.
By the way, the only reason my wife really noticed it was because we traded machines on a ride recently. I noticed hers had a very sudden, "grabby" engagement and she immediately mentioned how my SP700 just smoothly started moving.
Hope this helps!

Thanks! Is what you reference above ok? Does it hurt it, or just anoying?

My ATV did this for several hours of riding. I found that if I waited a few seconds after shifting it would not do it. Now coming up on 40 hours of use, it doesn't do it at all. Smooth shifting going from forward to reverse and back (lots of that during snowplowing) and no lag or clicking or grabbing.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Used it today for the 1st time...it did awesome! Went duck hunting this morning, then my son and I took it on a long trail ride by the house. A LOT of power, and an awesome ride. Very glad we got it.
Are there any things to watch out for during break in? The book just says to vary the speed and not let it idle for long periods...not wide open for several hours.
Thanks!

My 06 500 x2 Does the same thing. After talking to the dealer and reading alot of forums I have found out that this is normal. Alot of people have said that the click will go away as the quad gets broke in. I have 150 miles on mine now and and the click is going away. I rode for a 1/2 hour yesterday and only heard it once. It did freak me out at first.
