Default 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500 qyestions

I'm considering buying my first ATV and have come across a 2006 Sportsman 500. It's the carbureted model according to the seller. I plan to go look it over the next couple days. Is there anything in particular I should be careful of/watch for with this machine? It supposedly has very few miles and less than 80 hours on it.

80 hrs isn't anything for the 500 engine.Owner should have changed oil at 20-25 hrs. Just ask about what he's done, check the oil level and if mine I'd change fluids and give it a good look over if you buy it. Still some good low mileage older ones out there. The main problem with the 06 was the same as the later models, the plastic roller cage in the front diff that could crack. Easily fixed if it ever happens by changing to the stronger aluminum ones. Fits a lot of different models.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Ranger-500-800-Hardened-metal-Sprague-Cage-Roller-Carrier-differential-/121458308189?hash=item1c477ab45d&vxp=mtr

Thanks for the info. Would this model be included in the ECM recall? The seller doesn't seem to know anything about the recall.

OPT can confirm but I believe the flash was just for the EFI models. I never had mine done and it works like a top.

One thing to be aware of with this quad is if you like going through any deep water / mud, make sure you seal around the pull cord and ensure the handle is pushed down tight on the casing.

NLW- Thanks for the tip. I mostly plan to use the ATV for getting around on our deer lease- hauling stands, checking trail cameras, looking for deer sign, and hopefully, hauling deer out of the woods. We don't have a lot of mud or deep water, but I will keep it in mind.

Yes the 2006 carb model was included in the ecm recall. Check under the front panel. Should have a silver finned Sure Power module if it's been replaced. If the module is Black,it's Chinese and needs to be replaced! Hopefully the original owner has had this done, but if not any area dealer can do this free of charge. Here's the recall list.Polaris Industries Expands Recall of ATVs Due to Fire Hazard | CPSC.gov

Well, I bought it. It's a 2006 Sportsman 500 HO. It has 281 miles on it and 82 hours. The right front fender corner is cracked and the top of the master cylinder is scuffed. I think it might have been rolled but the damage isn't too bad.
It has a Warn 2500# winch and a 2" hitch already. I think for $3300 it was a good deal.

OPT, where is the ECM location? Not sure what you mean by front panel. I called the local Polaris dealer and they ran the VIN. Supposedly, the recall replacement was done, but I'd like to see it for myself.

Thanks

Below the head light pod.Either has the small pop out panel or remove the rack to get the main panel off.If the module is silver colored,it's been replaced.
