Scrambler 500...Good for duning?
#1
Hey I am going to Glamis soon with our new Scrambler and was wondering if any of you have done much duning with a Scrambler. It is quite heavy and am wondering if it has enough power to pull the hills. Is it more like a utility quad or a sport quad? Does it climb better with 4wd engaged or off with paddle tires? Any experience you can share would be appreciated.

From my own experience with sand and a heavy quad .. hill shooting can be scary. You can check my pics page to see where I usually ride. The sand there is fairly fine and very soft. My sportsman looses momentum quick going up the hills. I haven't tried shooting in awd, only 2wd so perhaps it would be a bit better. I wasn't running paddles either.
Heck .. give it a try. From the vids I've seen you can cut around and come back down if you feel it starting to slow down too much ...

I'd suggest getting some paddles. These quads have good power for what they are.
They are heavy, will try to dig down with regular tires, and won't have enough power probably for the big hills. They are a fun quad as long as you keep in mind it's not a light sport quad.

I take mine out to Little Sahara here in Utah. It does great for all around dune riding. Is it the fastest thing out there? Definitely not. Do I have a lot of fun? Yes. The only hills it has a hard time with is steep and long hills. Most (not all) hills I can get up just fine, it just slows down but keeps on going and all 4 spin (paddles on the rear) and I climb on up.
Definitely get some paddles on the rear - you don't always need 4 wheel drive, but I find I like it for side hilling / steep climbs so for more front end control due to the weigh of the machine.
I had a lot of fun without paddles on the rear, but 100x more fun with paddles. For just cruising around across different dunes - youll do fine, only stuff youll have a hard time with is the extra steep / long stuff - most of which you can climb, just slowly (if you have paddles).
Have fun and be safe!

I also spend tons of time at the dunes. I go to Little Sahara, Utah atleast monthly, Knolls, Utah Quarterly and Sand Hollow, Utah twice a year, or Semi-Annually. I rode for a year and a half and went everywhere that everyone else did. I finally bought some paddles before going to Sand Hollow this year, after finding some within the price range that I was willing to spend and the blow sand that they have in Sand Hollow. I loved them. I'm not able to high line as well since the paddles hook up much easier than the OEM tires. NVMYZ28, maybe we could hook up at Little Sahara sometime? By the way, if you bury your quad, shift it into AWD, push the override button and back out.... Watch the other sports quads get off and push/pull their quads out.........

Paddles will make your experience much more fun. The 500 does just fine. You can run in 2x or 4x. I mostly run 2x, but will throw it in 4x on and off all day. Stay away from Geckos. Look for Sandstars, Skat Traks, or Dune Runners. These are all availible in 22x10x10 or 22x11x10. You won't be the fastest, not even close, but you'll have a good time.

Thanx I just got the Sand Stars, I run them on all my quads and love em. I get the quad delivered on Friday, can't believe I am this excited for a bike that is basically for my wife. The WB pipe arrived today along with the K/N, I just hope I no longer have to push/pull her up the dunes like I did with her Trail boss. BTW I know of a TB with the RCR Stage 1 kit for sale
