Angle Sensors (what's the purpose?)
#1
I have done a search to trouble shoot a es shifting problem and noticed mention of an angle sensor. I've read how to change it and how much it cost's. But I want to know what it's for. How does it work? What is it? Can someone explain?

Well I can understand an angle sensor of some type for engine timing. But everyone seems to think that this shifting issue is related to an angle sensor (aside from bad battery and dirty connections). So to me that angle sensor they are referring to is not for engine timing and I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

I did a little more digging and somewhat understand how this works. The Transmission works off of hydraulic system (utilizing engine oil as hydraulic fluid) then there are little pistons between two plates that are at a certain angle at a particular time. These pistons between the plates convert low pressure fluid into high pressure fluid then giving energy to the driveshaft. In other words if one plate is in one position the other has to be syncronized. This is where the angle sensor comes into play.
I'm not very good at explaining myself sometimes, but I can see how this sensor works now.

Angle sensors are found on honda's with both ES and hondamatic drive systems. Angle sensors tell the ecm basicly which gear it is in. That's why they seem like the part that fails the most.
