Default metal shavings in oil, honda 400ex

My buddy has been having problems with his quad starting up, he thought it could be a jet problem especially since we went to california for the weekend and are normally in higher elevation in tucson. he just drained the oil when we got back and a few metal shavings dropped out with the oil and we're not sure where this is coming from... any ideas at all would help...thanks

Steel or aluminum? use a magnet and check.

In the oil filter, in the tank, or in the sump when you drained it??????

its aluminum, magnet didnt move it at all...
it was bored out from a 400 to about a 460 by someone he bought it from, and he usually has to replace the oil after 10 hours or so.. the shavings came out when we unscrewed the screw on the bottom of the tank.. not the oil filter.

Well if the oil was never changed from when it was bored otu I would say it's from that but I would def get it looked at and get the shavings out of the engine...check the bore to see if you can see if there are any signs of scraping on the cylinder walls.

how big were the metal shavings? you may want to try to flush the engine also. worst case scenario would be to disassemble the engine and inspect and clean everything.

Looks to me like threads from either the drain plug, or the tank bung.
