jetting for the winter?
#1
I was wondering what people would suggest for jetting for my 07 450r in the winter time...I have no performance mods currently and I also know that the Honds run lean from the factory, so my ? is how lean do they run? I haven't messed with my carb on the 450 yet but I looked online and saw that they have a 120 main in them now... should a 125 be fine to get me to run where it should in the summer and when it is warmer out and go to a 130 for the winter...I just want to get an idea so I can get me some jets and I am also at sea level. Thanks for any suggestions.

Not all bikes run lean from the factory. It depends a lot on where you live. Altitude, humidity and temperature. You shouldnt have to worry about it on a stock quad. Maybe give you idle jet screw out 1/4-1/2 turn to make starting a little easier. Other than that you should be fine. Ive rode my shee with stock jetting for 2 years in the cold with no problems so far.

If its totally stock, you probably wont need to do anything except adjust the mixture screw, as said.
Do you have any symptoms of lean?
Such as
- Poor acceleration; the engine feels flat.
- The engine won't respond when the throttle is snapped open, but it picks up speed as the throttle is closed. (A too-large main jet also mimics this symptom.)
- The engine runs hot, knocks, pings and overheats.
- The engine surges or hunts when cruising at part-throttle.
- Popping or spitting through the carb occurs when the throttle is opened. Or popping and spitting occurs through the pipe on deceleration with a closed throttle.
- The engine runs better in warm weather, worse in cool.
- Performance gets worse when the air filter is removed.

If there was ever a quad that came from the factory LEAN, it would be the 450R.
I'd bump it up and remove the airbox cover, and it will be a different quad! I replaced my fuel screw with an adjustable one just to make small changes.

I haven't ridden it in the winter just yet and it was in the 60's until this week...it ran fine for me when it was warm out but I heard that the 450r runs lean from the factory that's why I was wondering...I'll pull a plug when I get a chance and see

Hey guys I just took my plug out to see what it looked like and it was a tan color which means I am fine after I run it in the winter I will take a look at it again to make sure I am fine it started right up with the choke on and was a little hesitant but once it was warmed up it seemed fine plus the gas has been sitting for atleast a week or so.
