2005 yamaha kodiak 450 problem with rearend gears
#1
My rearend gears completely went out on my kodiak 450 and I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. I'm sure glad I had a warranty, the bill was $1,000. If anyone has had any other problems would you please let me know. Thank you

Well, I was out riding one day and I noticed that when I put the thing in reverse the gears were grinding. It didn't do it in high or low just reverse, so I took it to the mechanic and he said he had to replace all the gears in the rearend. He said that one of the gears broke and scared up all the other gears. He told me he had never seen one do that, so I was just doing some checking around.

Well, I never did check the fluid. I let the mechanic do it just like you said. I guess I will start checking my own stuff now too. The mechanic never said that it was low on fluid when he tore it apart.

I have the same ATV and had to replace my rear end last month. Last summer I hit a log and didn't notice that it had damaged a seal and all the oil drained and my rear end seized. The garage told me that it would cost me $1500 (Canadian dollars) but I was able to buy it online and performed the repair on my own for about $750.
Who know's what happened to yours but I don't think it's wide spread.

If you have a solid rear axel, bad axel bearings can also cause rear-end problems over the long run. I have only seen it once before though.
