Gearshift sticking
#1
Hi
I have a 2004.5 sportsman 600 twin. For the last week or so, the gearshift has been sticking until it is warmed up and after that works perfect. I park it in the shed and in neutral. It has been -10 to -20 C for the past week and lots of snow. When I want to used it, I got to put an heat lamp near the gear shift for about 10 minutes and then I can shift gears no problem. Any ideas? Is there a drain plug to drain any condesation?
Thanks for the help.

Will try that. But it seems to stick right at the base not the actual shifter itself. As soon as I warm it up, it works fine. Will have to take a real close at it in the morning and hopefully its warmed up a bit. Been plowing snow for the past 5 days or so.
Thanks

Jim, it is probably in your gearcase. The tranny has a small box where the shifter bellcrank goes in, take the 4 screws out and you will probably find some water and rust in there, clean out well and re assemble same way you took apart. You will want to grease the small gears inside with a grease that can withstand cold temps and you will want to seal the cover back on with something that obviously wont let water to enter, hope this helps.

Yep, mine did the same while deer hunting. Its the lil black box that holds the electrics for the shift light indicators on the pod . Took apart, cleaned and i put di-electric grease in there. worked for me!

Thanks everyone. Got the problem solved. Took the housing off and it was full of mud and ice. Cleaned it all out, packed it full of greased and put it back together. Seems to be ok now.
Thanks again
Jim
