Just picked up an old (89) LT80. Hasn't run in a few years so I thought I'd clean the carb. When I pulled the air cleaner boot oil poured out of the carb. Figure it came from the oil injection tank. Is this common? Should I block off the pump and run permix like my blasters or is that a no, no. Any info will be helpful as I'm new to these little quads.

The oil injection can and should be disconnected (my opinion after seeing them not work on a few).
You must take the clutch cover off and pull the pump drive (a lil black plastic thing) off the end of the crank. You then block the line with a toothpiick or something.

Thank you LT80. Ordered a gasket set. Figured the case is full of oil too so I'll take a look at the whole thing. Looks like I need to get to know the clutch system too. I need to step up the learning curve. Have a little fellow visiting this spring and he expects to hit the trails & dunes with the boys. Can't disappoint. Any simple things to gain a little power since I'll have it apart.

 

Leave 2 rollers out of the front clutch. This will help raise the stall speed slightly which will help alot in the sand. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

I have a 1992 with the same problem. Once the oil pump is disconected what mixture should I run? What should I be concerned with as far as the oil that was in the cylinder. Any recomendations for cleaning the cylinder without tearing the bike down? Thanks. Wish I would have found this forum a month ago.

 

my sister had an '89 LT80 (back when it was new) we had it for about 4 years. It was totally stock and never sat more than a month. No problems -ever. I would leave the oil injection in place if it were mine (get the problem fixed of course). You maybe asking for more trouble getting too serious into mods. If it's not fast enough go bigger. Example; my Raptor 700R is stock. I could have bought a honda or suzuki 400 for about $1500 less. It would take at least $1500 for the 400 to match the 700 in power but then a would have a far less reliable quad. think about it...

Mix at 32:1
To clean things out you can use the pre-mix fuel.
The oil didn't hurt anything.
The oil injector pumps are bulletproof. Till they aren't. Then you buy a top end rebuild minumum. Crank/rod bearings surley suffer also.
