OK, I kno this is an ATV site but the engine in my snowmobile is messed up and I wanna fix it but I dont kno what is wrong. First, the thing would pour gas out the overflows like mad, but we got that fixed and no more gas spilling. But the big problem it has is that when I first take off it wants to run fine, but then after about 15 sec. of running past 1/4 throttle, it sputters and dies. I was personally thinking at first that it was getting too much gas and flooding out, but now I dont know what its problem is because I fixed the "too much gas" thing. Now I'm leaning towards it not getting enough gas. Does anyone kno waht it is doing, by the way, the snowmobile is a 1978 arctic cat 440 jag borred out to a 500.

sounds like its running rich? Do snowmobiles have reeds? If so Id check them out, should be between the carb and cylinder.

It may be a jetting problem. If you know anyone who is good with jetting, let them take a look at it.

My brother's AC Panther did that and it was a plugged jet in the carb, I think. Does it run longer if you pull the choke? That should give you a clue if it is over or under fueled.

Ya, take the carbs apart and clena out every jet with a wire or Guitar string and make sure they are clean. Sounds like something is plug. I had a four wheeler that used to do the same thing and I did the cleaning thing with a guitar string and it fixed it.

Thanks for ur help guys, I got it running now. It ended that the carb was really dirty, and the fuel filter had so much crap in it that it looked black and you cant hardly blow through it. I put a new filter on and it runs great now.
