Do it yourself porting
#1
Hi I'm new to this site. I bought my first 87 250R last year, and love it. This year I've been busy with the motor. I have a hot-rods rotating assembly, boyesen reed cage, CR head, Keihin 39mm carb, and fmf exhaust. I have a dremmel and would like to do a little porting if I could. If someone could lead me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Luke

Luke, I want you to put the dremmel down and back away. You've spent to much on your engine so far to go and "practice" porting on it. The idea behind porting is to open up the flow chambers. If you do it right, it won't mess up the venturies built in, and make more horsies. Do it wrong, and you've added to the pile of scrap parts that you've already removed. Incorrect porting can cause flow problems, idle issues, and worst of all it could cause a ring to hang up on the newly widened port and rip off, scoring cyl and piston alike. Take it to a shop with a GOOD reputation of porting. I am not against porting, but it is the only thing I won't attempt on my lonesome. Hope I haven't caused too much dissapointment. Happy building ohterwise, it sounds as though you are doing a stand up job.

LOL, ok thanks man I understand. We are going to the dunes in 3 weeks and I just thought I could get away with something on the porting. I have a guy that's supposed to be awesome but don't know if he could get it back to me in time. I'll worry about it later, thanks again.

ya i would stay away from it.. I have experimented with acouple of 2 stroke cylinders with alot of luck.. 87 ltr with more modds than i can count. i kinda ported it and Polished at the same time though.. ran fine... and im getting ready to put a cylinder on a blaster thats pretty extreame in the port and polish wise.. Just to see if it works.... i like to experiment before i go hopping into a bigger nice bike.. Not saying my lt isnt i just toook alooooot of time... Also i honed it out after i was done so i didnt hand piston rings on it... I have a big bore, high compression piston, 36mm mikuni Dslide carb, k&n filter, ported polished head, LRD full pipe, stroker crank with hot rod, lightened flywheel, advanced timing, on my LT,, that thing is a beast! I love it.. but hey i always think you learn from your mistakes! just hone it... if you feel confident..
