1986 CR250 was that a good year bike??

I found a 86 CR250 pretty cheap, the motor has been torn down but not re assembled yet, all stock he had a bent shifter rod and wants 500, I have a guy that re assemble for less than 300 not counting parts is this a fair price or is this a headache to happen?
Frame wise looks great almost new
BTW its for my 15 year son

I can't tell ya labor wise if its a good deal or not, but I did own a 1986 CR125 and that thing ran like a scalded dog. Later on I got a 88 125 and it wasn't even close. The only problem I ever had with the 86 was I let my step brother borrow it and he locked it up (straight gas, no oil). Needless to say he never rode anything of mine again. Man I miss that thing ! May be a little fast for a 15 year old, not too say he is inexperienced, but those things scream.

dont let its age fool you, the 86's were hard hitting front end lifting teeth in the handlebar bikes, 15 years old? thats when I was a freshman.. I think... lol, and I owned a XR500R that had Less power, wow- yeah thats alot of bike! the issues these older CR's had is the power hits all at once, so one second your lugging around and the next your at peak power just like a light switch!
