2004 honda trx400fg slipping problems
#1
I have an 04 honda trx 400 with an electric or auto transmission. Whenever I climb a hill or put any torque on it in 2 or 4 wheel the gears slip and it won't go. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

So this is a Rancher 400 AT???? If so, it is a hydrodynamic trans powered by pistons pumping oil, and has no "gears". You don't want to tear into that transmission! I don't think Honda even services them...they just swap them out. But do get a service manual, and go throught the trouble shooting section and see what it says.
Search for an article on the Rubicon transmission....same basic mechanism.

First confirm oil level. The sound you may be hearing could be the oil pump cavatating from lack of oil. Once you have proper oil level, make sure the shift cable is adjusted properly.
I've seen cases where the slider that shifts the sub transmission (rear of the engine), binds inside the housing. This will not let it go into gear fully. You can tell if this is the case by unhooking the shift cable at the engine and trying to shift it manualy. If it shifts real hard, this is what is wrong, not engageing gears totally within the sub transmission. The slider shaft and housing can be removed an dcleaned with some fine emery for smooth operation.
As far as gears, there is one big gear on the output shaft inside of the sub transmission. This gear is slipped over splines on the shaft. It is driven off a gear on the end of the countershaft. Odd if it would happen, but a shift fork within the sub transmission gear assembly could be bent and not sliding some gear side mesh totally together. These gears are not back cut so if a fork is bent they could jump. Rare though
The only other splines that could be stripping could be on eather the front or rear drive shaft couplings. Also under the front cover the shaft that the front driveshaft slips over, is a short shaft going to splinnes which it slips over to the main driven shaft off the sub transmission.
If you have to get this deep into the problem, may I suggest a service manual ?
