Default LT80 No Start

Hello,

I have a 97 LT80 that will not start. It slowly go harder and harder to start and finally would not start at all. I did a top end job since it has never been rebuilt. I cleaned the carb, It has good spark and seems to be getting gas. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the forums tony_p..
Could the pipe be plugged?
In top end job, I take it you have new piston and bore?

The pipe had build up at around the exhaust port which I cleaned. Is there a way to check the muffler internally? I replace the piston and rings on the rebuild. The old piston had some build up on the top and some blow by on the intake side. Other than that it looked OK.

So you did have the cylinder bored? What's the compression?
I literally blow thru the pipe to check. To clean, put the pipe in a fire and blow compressed air thru it.
New plug?

Check the compression...it may have been worse than you thought.

USUALLY to make sure it isn't something minor...I will put a tablespoon of gas in the sparkplug hole and give it three or four good kicks and see if it will light. Even if you get a little stumble or sign of life...you know you are close.

No I didnt have the cylinder bored. I blew compressed air thru the pipe and air came out the other side. I have tried the gas in cylinder trick with gas and starter fluid. Not even a hint of life. I guess I may not have enought compression and need the cylinder bored. Where can I get a cheap compression tester and what is the working range for this model?

Thanks for all the help!

Sears.
120 pounds of compression minimum.

It is working now. After all this talk about compression I noticed I forgot to put the ring that goes under thre second ring on. I have no Idea what this is called??? I put it back togher and it runs great. Thanks for helping a rookie mechanic out. My son will be pleased!!

Good on you!

FWIW 120 would be way into the rebuild arena. Personally anything under 140 should be fixed. New small bores should be 150 and above.
