nghtmre4u,I just had this same exact problem.I have the same year machine. I took it to the shop and got it fixed it was the little electric motor that shifts the gears it sticks out in front of the motor. The shop fixed it but it looks very easy to change your self.It was about $125.00 for the shifter motor. nghmre4u Same thing as mine,I wonderd if you take off the electric motor on the front of the motor,if you could take your manuall shifter and see if it shifts ok.I'm sure we have the same problem. Mudrooster

The gearshift plate inside the front cover is broke. Common for those early year Ranchers.
The gearshift plate slides over splines on the shift shaft. The shift shaft rotates when the electric shift motor is activated, or when the manual shifter pivited.
The other end of the gearshift plate catches some pegs on the shift drum's star wheel.
Eather the plate split at the end and opened up or one of the two tabs that catsh the pegs, has broken. This will let it shift all the way one way and not back down so it leaves the unit stuck in gear.
An improved replacement gearshift plate is available from your Honda dealer.

You can do it without even draining oil if you want by standing the unit on it's tail and securing it from dropping. If you do this turn off the fuel petcock and probably plug off the tank cap breather.
Remove:
Front wheels
inner fenderwells
footwells and front mudguards
footwell support rods.
Unbolt the front differential and slide it foreward to allow front driveshaft removal.
Remove driveshaft.
Remove o-ring from drive splines and black tape over where it was to keep the seal from being cut if removed through the case cover
remove angle sensor shield and disconnect sensor
remove shift motor, shift gears and plate.
unbolt the plastic side covers and remove them from the engine
Remove the oil dipstick
unbolt the front crankcase cover and remove
keep track of the thin shim washers that will want to fall off the shift pivot shaft.
remove the clutch apply mechanism and bearings
unstake the clutchpack and remove the center nut and washer
slide the clutch ahead until it contacts the centrifical clutch (you do not have to unbolt the spring mounting bolts from the clutshpack) .
remove shift parts and spacer washers from the shift shaft. lift the shift plate away from the stay and pivot under the clutch to remove
retain the spring from the old shift plate to install onto the new plate
install spring onto new shift plate
install onto the shift shaft and pivot into place under the clutch
reinstall the clutch and new clutch nut. Torque and stake it.
Reassemble all parts in reverse order
Note:
before removing the clutch nut, look at the position of the clutch plates and note that they are stacked together along with the back plate. Make sure that the clutch pack is slipped all the way over its splines and that none of the plates are seperated or seperateed from the backing plate before torqueing the clutch nut and staking it.
I have seen guys impact the nut on the clutch and it will make the back plate come mis-aligned. Same if they take the clutch apart and install it mis aligned with the back plate. When this happens you have direct drive when your unit is all together. It will only drive off the centrifical clutch. You will end up pulling it apart again and fixing the problem and putting everything back together again. Like I say, take note of the clutch pack before removing it.
I replace these shift plate in a little over an hour and fifteen minutes from start to finish. Remenber, I have done hundereds of them over the years.
New guys in the shop will take them from 3 to 4 hours.
Good luck
