Default dead battery

Hi,
I just bought my 7 year old a 110cc Easy Vehicle atv.. I know next to nothing about these machines, been reading here trying to learn a few things. The battery is dead everyday, we charge it, and it goes dead by the next day. We purchased a new battery thinking the one that came with it was junk, but the same thing happens. Is this the way it is supposed to be? My son started with a "gator" from Walmart, and I hated that it would run for awhile and then you'd have to charge it, so I thought when we got this that it would be more like our Polaris atv, it just starts everyday, and the battery doesn't drain down.

I can't seem to find any information about this machine online anywhere. But I thought I read on here that they should keep a charge, and you shouldn't have to put it on a charger everynite?
The battery I got is an Autocraft 4L-bs, again, I know nothing about any of this, but I was hoping to throw it on my charger, but the lowest that goes is 2 amp, and the battery says it needs a 1 amp charger. Suppose I would harm the battery if I put it on the 2 amp charger?

Thanks to anyone who could offer some help. Hope I don't sound like a total idiot, but I'm new to all of this.

It should stay charged and no the 2 amp charger will not harm the battery.

When you got the new battery did you charge it overnight before installing it on the atv? Did you have to put the acid in yourself or was it already there?

If you had to put the acid in yourself then you needed to wait a couple hours or so before putting a charger on it - also after charging the battery you should wait at least and hour before installing it. Once this is done then you can charge the battery while it is on the atv any time you want.

With reference to your battery going dead.
1) Your battery connections are loose or the ground wire is loose (bad connection someplace)
2) The magneto coils are shorted
3) The regulator/rectifier shorted
4) The battery itself is bad - (too much acid, not enough acid, cell plates are bad etc)

A charger with an auto shut off is prefered. The rate of charge only references the quality of charge. The slower it charges the better quality the charge - i.e 1amp is better than 2amp, 2 amp is better than 5 amp etc etc. It takes longer to charge a battery at 2amps than 15amps but the quality of the charge is better.

Do not rely on your magneto to maintain your battery because it won't. You should charge the battery on a regular basis - I do mine at least once a month and sometimes more.

You need to get charger that's made for ATV's , motorcycle's and lawn mower batteries ; a 1 amp charger with the automatic shutoff to keep from damaging the battery ! But it sound's like there's something wrong with the charging system on your quad , it's possible you may have gotten a bad battery from wal-mart ; i would try another battery this time get one from auto zone ! And take the one you bought from wal -mart with you to auto zone , they will check it out for free to see if it will hold a charge ; this way you will know if it's the battery ! I hope this is of some help , and you get it going ; and that it's only the battery ! williebee

Thanks for responding.
The battery we got was from Advantage Auto, it is an Autocraft Power Sports Battery, for atv's, motorcycles, etc... We had to add the acid, we then waited overnite to charge it.. But I'm not sure if we waited after it was charged to install it in his atv.
This is the third battery we have had this happen to, two from the place we bought it from, and the new one from Advantage Auto, so I'm leaning towards a problem with the atv, rather than the batttery. The place we bought this atv from, is having the same problem with the ones he has there, but has no clue as to why.
I will be researching your list and hope that we are able to solve this problem. #1 on the list I can handle, but I have no idea what a magneto coil, or regulator/rectifier is? Anyway to point me in the right direction on how to check #2 and #3 on your list?

Thanks so much, I now have a place to start at least. I would be happy with charging the battery once a week even, but not everynite.

Your issue sounds similar to mine. I just posted a question about it.

Did you ever figure it out?

Our issue with the Battery is solved.. But.. I think in our Case it was bad Batteries. This Spring, we purchased another battery, installed it.. and have not had a problem since. I think he has only had to put the battery on the charger two or three times all summer so far. We do have to change the spark plug often, and the fuses too. But once we figured all that out, no problems.

Sorry, I can't be of more help.
