2007 Rancher ES

If you have problems with the Electronic shifting how does the optional manual lever work?

Can you shift all day up and down once it's bolted on?

I dont mind the manual version shifting but you don't get the nice display when you go with the EM model.

I seem to recall posts on older topics in this forum indicating ES models have a backup part in the tool kit you take out and use in the event of an electric shift malfunction.

But consider this alternative to the "nice display" on the electric shift models:

I bought the Rancher TRX420FM (manual shift 4wd) and installed an hour meter for maintenance, and then a 12v socket to power my trusty hand-held GPS. While I do have to hit the power button to turn on the GPS when I begin a ride, it is so much more useful than the "nice display", having options for customizing the data on screen and features like backtracking and maps at your finger tips. It works for me, see my photos.

There should be a backup shift lever in your tool kit. It does not even bolt on, and I think they do that on purpose. It is intended for you to get into some usable gear like 3rd....and limp home....

Seems like you could buy a regular shifter that bolts on and give it a try.....

I might just go the Manual version and buy a TrailTech Vapor for $120 and have a whole lot more data than the ES comes with.

The RPM display would be intersting.

The GPS I'm using is actually one I bought for sailing a few years ago, a Magellan Meridian Marine, but it works well for the quad too. I bought the handlebar mount and installed a 12v power socket so I don't have to rely on the AA batteries. See the result here.

I guess the Trailtec Vapor you mention provides engine RPM as well. I installed the $40 Honda hour meter which shows engine RPM while it's running and time accumulated when it's not, or pressing the face switches between the two. This was an easy installation shown in these photos..

If I didn't already have the marine GPS it would be nice to have something designed more for off-road vehicle use like the Trailtec.
