I got a 2002 fourtrax/Rancher TRX350ES that drains my new bettery in just a few hours. It also blows a 30A fuse that I can't remember whats it for.
I noticed als the the rectifier is super hot, not sure how hot they usually are.
I gets hot when I put in the battery even without the key being in. Any idea what could be wrong?

 

You should be able to disconnect the battery completely, and still use the pull starter to start/ride it??? If so, does it run fine without the battery in the curcuit???

 

It does not have a pull starter. But I did take off the rectifier and it starts (I guess it gets spart from the batter) but it does not shift (electric shift). I want to make sure that I dont' buy a new rectifier only to find out its something else.

Does anyone have an owners manual for a 2002?

 

Has the pull starter been taken off, or you just don't realize it is there??? The reason I ask, is that you would be surprised at how many people own one of these for years and don't even know it is there........

Are you sure you unplugged the right connector ?

The electric shift not working with the battery disconnected/unit running is not unusual

Yup it does not have a pull starter, maybe it was an option.
And it does run without the rectifier. I'm holding it in my hand.
The coil might just take power from the batter for spark.

 

It does have a pull start , it is hidden behind a panel on the side . It was not an option ...

 

yes this machine does have a pull start behind a small black panel behind your right calf....

I also have a rectifier problem and it does run when its unplugged. I'm looking for a specific test for the trx350fm rectifier/regulator.

nottoo worry too much about the heat, it' meant to get hot. hence the finned design.

This fault is common on the 350. If something is blowing the main fuse, disconnect the rectifier and try a new main fuse. You don't need to start it, just switch ignition on, try lights, horn etc. If everything is now OK you have a faulty regulator. If you want to double check, there should be open circuit between the regulator's housing and the spade that the red wire connects to. A temporary fix is to isolate it from the frame, and re-connect the wires, it will probably now work without blowing fuses, but will deteriorate, and needs be fixed to the frame for the heat to disperse properly, so should be changed ASAP. This fault peculiar to the 350 regulator, so won't occur on other Honda models.
