Question of how much an entire engine build costs.

Wanted to know how much would a small big bore kit will cost me for my o5 dsx.Its not in need of one but since ive been doing alittle stuff i want more now!So on to what i might like to see.Would be that i want a noticable difference and i want the engine build to be very reliable if possible.I kinda wanted alotta hours on the big bore.I wasnt sure what to go with.A 730 big bore or ?????.Maybe a 680cc kit??.Need opinions ive never got to look at my engine internally yet or look at alotta engine kits. What will they run me also.Any suggestions at all would be well appreciated.

Perfect example of why it is good to put your location in your sig.
Where are you from? We may be able to point you to someone that lives close to you?
What is your riding? Dunes? Trails? Flat Drags?
Are you looking to put an extended swingarm on?
Without more info it doesn't make sense to tell you anything.
Give us something so we can give you the best options for you.

I live Lagrange,Indianna.I ride trails alittle bit .But i ride at attica,Indianna that has a mixture of riding.Water, mud, sand dunes.I would say i want to build up my engine for reliable horsepower.I ride alittle bit of everything.I dont want a extended swinger. Also what are the sizes for big bore kits like 720cc ect.I know this isnt alot of info but i kinda just want more out of my ds in general. And i want to do the bore and pistons ect.I thought to go to 12:1 compression.Im just worried about sacrificing reliability. Also ill do a different carb.I plan on doing this in maybe a few months.Saving cash for it now.

I tend to look at it this way. On a stock bore, you have decent bottom and top. Increase compression gives you better bottom. Install bigger cams gives you better top.
The bigger bore you go, the more it feels like compression, or bottom end, with some gain on the top aswell.
The bigger stroke you go, the better top end it gives you, with gains on the bottom.
The cheapest way to gain more power is just a piston and cams on a stock bore.
If you want to spend a little more, any of the big bores with give you good gains. When you do them, you must change you piston anyhow, and now you will have both the big bore, plus the added compression. Even with stock cams you would see a huge gain on the bottom. Now add some good cams, and your getting somewhere.
I personally have always liked the stock bore builds. But they are a revy engine setup. I rode Duneme's old 760, and it had alot of power everywhere. With just about any big bore, you are going to need a swinger. Unless you like looking at the stars!
As for reliability. Look at any of the cast cylinders. I have always wondered why someone just dont make a 680-690ish kit. Just cant see spending as much as they want for the cast cylinders.
Good luck.

I would really think about working in stages. It is a pretty large chunk of change to do it all at once. The HPR site has a really nice write-up on the stages. It is basically:
1. Carb and exhaust
2. Clutch
3. Compression
4. Cams/Ignition
5. Porting
You can spend $2500 on a budget build (see ERBE's budget build) to 10's of thousands on a full drag setup from one of the major builders, and anywhere in between. It is a huge investment whatever you decide, so I would I would spend a bunch of time searching this forum for info on the particular build you are looking at. I would say most of your options are covered in the past couple years of threads so just start working that search function, and you will find all the info you need to make your own decision. You will get a different answer from everyone you talk to, so take it all with a grain of salt, but do talk to everyone you can about their build. Get as many opinions as you can, then make your decision. Good luck!!!!!

You will easily spend $2500 on a budget build stock bore stock stroke engine.
A cheaper alternative would be to buy a built engine ready to bolt in for your particular application....if your interested in going this route, shoot me a pm.

Well i like the idae of doing maybe a 12:1 compression.I think im going to do a stock bore setup. But im 17 right know and soon when i turn 18 i got a job at a trailer factory. Then ill start my build.First ill buy a nice carb and see if thats enough to hold me over untill i save up enough for the piston ect.But thanks for your posts already giving me great idea's.Well Apreciated

Oh and one last question i have is if i just wanted to for now to put a carb on my ds i already have my perfect gearing and the exhuast tip. Also if i wanted to go with a bigger compression say 12:1 or even 14:1 what will that also require to do porting ect.I am now understanding i might not want to spend thousands of dollars yet.But the compression, piston, carb idea i can do soon. Thanks

Piston, carb, and compression are all great gains for the buck. You will not be required any porting, and when you deside to, you can do as much or little as you want. Bigger = more air/fuel flow = more power.... Couple of things....
You will need to spend more for higher Octane fuel with compression....
And also, with carb and Piston you will want a ported Intake manifold to help that flow out. That will be one of your main restrictors for the parts you want to add.
And my .02 if you are looking for a piston....I would TRY and get one of HPR's Gen 6 pistons. I have had a cp, and now one of theirs and the difference is night and day....
