Well, my '01 400EX is knocking like crazy! When idling, it sounds really bad and you can hear it from far aways. It's been ridden a lot but well maintained. I'm not the first owner so no telling what it has been through. I just know they tried to play around w/ the carb. and took the choke off(and didn't run as good) but we switched it back to the original and it ran good w/o a knock at the time. So I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and what's the approx. price to fix it that I'll be looking at and dreading after a while? Thanks.

 

timing chain slap!!!!Replace the tensoner and chain!!Not a big job,if you know what your doing its only 1-1/2 hr and about $68 in parts.Good luck.P.S. you may want to do a comp. check also,and make sure its not a piston slapping!!!!

is it a loud knocking or ticking...cuz all honda motors make funny sounds...valves could be outta wack thats a big thing on honda's...

 

My dad had the same problem and he replaced the tensioner and chain but it still knocks.
I guess it would be more of a loud ticking while my dad's has more of a knock.
He said it may be the connecting rods...

 

I had one make a ticking noise. Had to replace timing chain and tensioner. That took care of 75% of the sound but, had to adjust the valves to get rid of the rest. I'd check your valves with a feeler gauge. .004" intake and .005" exhaust.

 

We did that ^not to long ago but still there.

 

i got the same problem on my car i adjusted the valves 3 times and still there...i also just did the timing belt, auto tensioner, and all that and my car still ticks when i cruising and down shift...its just really a honda thing...i also have an honda 84 200s trike and it ticks like crazy but hell its been running great for the past 6 years like that haha...its a honda thing wut can i say...

 

I have a 250x that makes a ticking sond, but I cant seem to figure it out either, but it still runs like a top.

 

what octane of gas do you run in it?
