suzuki lt 80 weak spark
#2
I have a 1988 Kawasaki KDX200, among other bikes. On a spark tester, the spark looks weak, much weaker than any of my other bikes. I tried everything, stator, coil, CDI.
Let me back up... The original problem was intermittent "no spark". I got a stator from RickyStator.com... and then no more intermittent spark.
Even after a new stator, the spark appeared weak. But it has never failed to run.
Another problem I was having was poor fuel delivery, caused by some trash in the in-tank fuel strainer. I got a clear fuel line and that help me to see at a glance if fuel is getting to the carb.
What is my point? That it may run just fine with a weak looking spark... And that fuel delivery should be thoroughly checked before buying electrical parts. they are expensive and most times non-returnable.
I also had a briggs & stratton go-kart engine with a weak looking spark that runs great.
I know all the troubleshooting manuals say the spark needs to be blue and fat.... But make double sure about your fuel before you try buying other parts. You can put some gas in the spark plug hole, spray starting fluid in the intake, check the plug, is it wet? Is it dry? Get a clear fuel line, is there fuel in it? Take the jets out, are they clogged? Is the float sticking? I know that is a lot to digest... But keep us posted! And good luck!

thanks for getting back. carb has been rebuilt but i stiil made sure its getting gas even tried a little gas in hole. plus the plug was wet before. i have had a problem before and it was the stater, after it was replaced, the spark was big. but now with this prob. its weak and sometimes not there. tried new plug no diff. i followed the wires, ground is ok even pulled off the rotor and sanded the stater etc. maybe i will pick up a book to check what the #s should be on the meters thanks again

rickystator.com sells LT80 stator assemblies. And they will re-wrap the one you have if that is what you want to do.
You can check your stator with an ohm meter.
