Default Aluminium ! Aluminium ! Aluminium ! the new ds 450 !!!!

Im not a pro sport quad rider or a veteran quad owner but after awhile of hearing the new ds commercials and reading the ads im worried about it having problems in the long run. Ive heard of the outlanders having frame cracking issues so brp dosent impress me in that catagory, i think there should be no excuses for frames cracking with our technology available under normal use. I have to say they have raised the bar " possably" with the new ds 450 but only time will tell and they said that with the outlander!! The whole atv is pretty inpressive but all the aluminium bothers me besuse steel is alway tougher regardless in any aplication. Also the hollow rear axle thats not impressive what they saved maybe a couple pounds i predict they will have bending issues with it solid ones bend with normal use. Other than that they really started from sratch again maybe rasied a few bars in the industry. I want to see long term abuse not just what they have done recent and see it hold up against the other atv`s out like the yamaha 450 thats a really nice atv wins alot of shoot outs but to bad it doesnt have efi ! plus i heard brp customer service sucks *** so im going wait on this one.

look at the ds chasis...its the strongest and most durable chasis on ANY stock quad to this date. But yea the outlander does have issues no matter what anyone says the problem is there...I would deff wait on buying a new ds450 its new technology to the ATV world and most quads have issues that are needed to be worked out. If i was buying a 450 sport bike right now it would the suzuki 450 HANDS DOWN....widest, lowest, most travel suspension, really wakes up with cheap mods, has looks that stay with the best of them....and doesnt look like a polaris that got ran into a brick wall(ds450).

The chromolly tubing used in the new DS450 axle is stronger than the solid steel ones used by most other manufacturers. 4130 Chromolly is amazing stuff!

can you imagine the vibration effect from it being hollow its like hitting a ball with a wiffle ball bat or a louisville slugger not to scale example lol I just know solid is better and yes thats strong stuff its just the hollow thing and i dought the weight they saved matters with the handling and power of the motors you shouldnt notice.

I ran a hollow Chromolly axle for a few months. It weighed about 2 lbs more than a solid JJ&A aluminum axle. Part of the reason it was heavier is it was full width for a DS650.

It worked great. I had a couple of hub failures early on but I went to a Honda sprocket hub and that solved it.

I don't know what vibration you mean. Just because it is hollow doesn't mean it is out of balance. It still has a center axis.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much. The increased strength, reduced weight and full width is all good news.

I hallow alxe will always be stronger then a solid. Look at the automotive industry and driveshafts. I have even had a few built for 4x4n in a jeep and wanted to go with a sold driveshaft for the front and was told a hollow one will be way stronger. Went with the hollow and it lasted for ever.

The way I underdstand it, its all about surface area. With a hollow tube you have roughly twice the surface area as a solid piece. If you want to try the logic, take a piece of 1/4 inch solid stock and a piece of 1/4 round tube. Try to bend them with you hands. The solid stock will bend at a relatively easy rate from begining to end. With the round tube the piece will take much more initial force to begin the bend, but once it creases, and loses its basic intebrity it loses all strength.

If you add to that the extended hubs which shorten the overall axle length, and the 4130 chromoly, I am guessing this thing will be equal in strength to the solid axles every other bike uses.

If it does play out to be as good as a solid axle, the weight savings on the rotating mass will be worth their weight in gold. I have gone to great lengths to save rotating mass as have others. Light weight drive train components from the factory will be huge!
