Default 2003 400 Sportsman No Power on Hills

All,
I have spent the better part of the morning serching topics and threads on the issue. I have read everything from re-jetting to cleaning of the carberator. Here is my situation, while riding on the Hattfield McCoy trail in WV, my father's 400 began to sputter and cut out going up hills. The machine runs fine on level ground. If the carburator has dirt in it, why would it only be affected on an incline? Also, the EBS has not worked for some time now. I changed the belt and had no effect. Could these issues be linked and the problem be in the clutching? As far as messing with the jets, I don't see why this would be the problem since it just started happening. The machine has 1000 + miles. Also, as I was pushing the 400 up the hills with my 700, I could smell fuel pretty distinctly. I hope this makes sense to someone that can help.

Thanks and great forum.

I don't know the machine at all, but the very first thing I would check is the float level. Float level is a symptom of what you describe.

Is this a simple adjustment? What am I looking for?

Yes, simple adjustment. I don't have the spec's so your going to have to get a figure from someone else.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Check the secondary clutch for worn buttons or broken spring.

if the float was set wrong then it would act like it was runing out of gas. the clutch would make it bog as well but shouldnt make the engine sputter.

The 400's were known to come from the factory way over jetted. If it's bogging down under load that is what the problem is. If you search any of the Polaris forums you will see the 400 came with a 172 main jet and most dropped to around a 160 or so to fix the sputter/bogging problem...

Thanks all for your input. I think I am going to change the jet and see if that fixes the problem.
