1988 TRX 250X
#1
Hi. I just bought an 88 trx250x, but when I look up parts online, they all show a chain drive.
I'm looking for a manual, but am wondering whether it is a different motor/drive system than the 88.
Is there an easy way to find out what is under the seat on this thing?
Thanks,
Pete

Here are the pictures: http://pholm.spaces.live.com/
Still haven't found the definitive manual. Had one on hold from the library but they say it no longer exists. The guy at Honda/Yamaha looked up the registration and came up with 1988 TRX250X. I'm still confused (nothing new).
I'm learning about these machines because my son is getting into the sport. If my questions are dumb, just chalk it up to Alzheimers.
Thanks for any and all replies.
1. Is the weld on the rear axle something to worry about?
2. It looks like it's just missing a tail pipe and spark arrester. This needs to be OHV-legal in California. What am I not seeing? Does the spark arrester come with the tail pipe (if I can find it)?
3. Is there anything else from the pics that your experienced eyes can clue me in on?
4. Why would the registration call it an 88 if it's an 87? DMV snafu? If I can find it, which manual should I get?
Thanks again.

The white/red plastic and front frame are 1988 TRX250X ... The VIN should start with "JH3TE1300JK100001 the last 5 digits will be different 00001 was the TRX250X bike made in 1988 .. The rest of the frame and engine are not 250X the engine is 1985-86 ATC250 BigRed or TRX250 4trax ... The engine number is under the exhaust .. An ATC250 BigRed engine number starts with "1985-86 -- TE04E- " TRX250 4trax engine number is " TE06E ..

That explains a lot. And brings up more questions.
The only numbers I find with a mirror under the exhaust is the 246cm(cube) and what looks like a muffler or spark arrester number (GOSHI HMHCO) in the back.
I'll have to go out tomorrow with some solvent and a light.
Thanks.

ANOTHERROOKIE............You unmistakenly have, after viewing the pictures, what I call a HYBRID atv. The plastic is 250X, the wheels are 250X, the frame is 250X, the pipe is 250X. Your engine is a shaft drive one, probably a 250 four trax, because I see the starter. The 250X engine is kick start only. Someone has also fabricated a 250 or 300 four trax rear end on it to accomodate the drive shaft coming out of the engine.
I had a 91 250X frame one time that I mounted a Honda 200M three wheeler motor to. I called it the only 250X around with electric start and auto clutch!
