How does the 450R Hold up?
#1
I just bought a 07 450r... And its pretty fast...Prolly the fastest quad Ive riden...But Im curious to some of you guys who ride in big groups...Because I ride solo...(No one around else who has a quad)... What does the 450r really hold up to as far as speed and things of that nature. And help in this would be great...Thanks

The 450R is the king of desert endurance racing! Places like Baja and Vegas to Remo, where you start up the quad, then ride 1000 miles non-stop. If you aren't on an R you probably won't even finish the race, much less win! What more did you want to know????
I ride with four 450R's. All have HRC cams. All are desert machines, that run at high speed, high RPM. All have well over 200 hrs without anybody needing a rebuild yet. Not bad for engines everybody told us would grenade after 15 hours! We all run high quality Maxima Extra ester synthetic oil, and are diligent about maintenance!
Maintenence is important! All the 450's (not just the Honda!) with little slipper pistons will experience a lot of compression blow-by, causing the oil to get thinned out from fuel contamination very rapidly. Frequent oil changes are absolutely necessary! I try to keep it down to 5 hrs. http://www.belray.com/scripts/...8b6-965a-08bf7a767444
Valve adjustments are important, and it is a good idea to be sure your air filter is clean and properly oiled.

Well...I just did my first oil change...After the first 6Hours. I check alot of things every ride...I will have to look at the maxima oil. I was unsure what oil to use so i just went with the honda GN4.... I also just changed the plug to the iridium plug. Now about the HRC kit... Where in the world can i find anything on one... That and could you recommend a good pipe...And holy crap are pipes expensive... Any help would be great.. I love the deep throaty-ness out of my 450r.... But I would love to think that it will hold up with the other 450s.

See this post about oil: http://forums.atvconnection.co...tid/8/threadid/528254
Honda GN4 is fine for the kids 90, but the 450R screams at high RPM and needs a high quality synthetic! If you can't find anything else, run Honda's HP4M (synthetic blend with moly) in the engine side, and Honda's HP Trans Oil (or Maxima MTL) in the trans side.

I have a question about these 450 motors. How long do they last. I hear they need to be rebuilt ofton. Can they last long for trail riding and such. How ofton should you change the oil, check valves, etc. Is valve checking and adjusting easy on there bikes? thanks

All the 450's tolerate a lot of compression blow-by. This means that the oil gets rapidly diltued out with fuel. You start with 10W40 oil, and you end up with 0W20....which isn't going to protect anything.
Five hours is about the max I try to go. If I am expecting a long ride, or we are camping for the whole weekend, I will run 15W50 instead of 10W40. 15W50 might end up a 10W30, which would still be ok.
And, these engines can really benefit from high quality ester synthetic oil! I run either RedLine or Maxima Extra.
There are posts on the board about valve adjustments. I say do them twice as often as the owner's manual recommends.
