Hey, i have a 2004 polaris sportsman 700 and just recently i was messing around with it and i tried to use the 4x4 and it did not work. The 4x4 light comes on and it shows that its engaged but it doesnt work. The same thing happens when i try to use it in reverse. Every once and a while it will go into 4x4 but it seems like it has gotten worse, i can definetly not count on it. I heard of someone replacing the speedo and that fixing the problem. Anybody know where to start?

 

Have you checked the fluid in the front hubs? I would recomend that you take the front hubs off and clean all of the internals,check the seals,inspect the hilliard clutch assemblies(the aluminum carrier,rollers should be clean and move freely, **Caution Do Not Remove the Spring** If you do it may be stressed and allow the wheel to engage when you are at high speed!!!!). If you don't have a manual I can give you the re-torque specs on the nut that holds it all together.You have to use either Polaris hub fluid or Type F ATF only in the hubs.Filled @ the 4 or 8 o'clock position.

the 04' has the newer style front end and not the hubs style on the outside where you fluid. the newer one has the roller cage that is famous for breaking.

 

Well then unfortunately, the info I have is on '03. Maybe someone else has the right info... I'm off by a year...

 

Does anyone know the first steps of trouble shooting this problem?
