Can someone tell me something about the honda automatic transmission. Good--- Bad. Will be used mainly for trail riding, desert and mountains.
Thanks

There are two different kinds: The Rubicon has a continuously variable hydromatic one that works by pumping oil to pistons that push on a swashplate. They have good reputations as both a trail and work quad. http://www.motorsports-network.../rubcon01/tranny.html

The Rincon has an automotive style torque converter type 3 speed. I do not like the fact that the Rincon free wheels (no engine braking) at low speed. Even Honda calls the Rincon an "SUV", so I think of it as more of a trail cruiser than a work quad.

You don't hear of a lot of problems with either one. Both do have ESP pushbutton manual shifting, where you can shift between different "gears" yourself.

Personally, I'm a good old time proven gear-on-gear manual tranny guy! I too do trail, desert, and mountain riding, so if I needed something bigger than my Ranchers, my only choice would have to be the Honda Foreman 500.
