My buddy and I just bought Polaris 400s. We thought we were buying the same year/model but they are actually different. What I've noticed so far is a difference in the front hubs, and the gear shift pattern. His also does not have a fuel indicator, but I'm not sure if that is something different or if his just doesn't work.
Anyone have any answers?

The 2004.5 sportsmans have a fuel gage with I think a little smaller fuel tank. The 2004 does not have a fuel gage and i think a little bigger fuel gage. Well at least i know the fuel gage is correct... but i am not sure with the fuel capacities of the 400s.. I use to have a 2004 sportsman 600 and went riding with a friend that had a 2004.5 sportsman and his had a gage and i did not. He also ran out of gas quicker than I did. I am not sure on what else is different. I don't think there is much different. But I know the fuel gage is correct and the 2004s did not have them and the 2004.5 did.

The 2004.5 has the straight line shifter with park gear..I also has the four wheel drive unit in the front differental instead of the wheels..If you need to replace front axle parts (cv joints -bearings ) you will use the 2002-2003 Sportsman 700 parts not 2004 Sportsman parts..Just ran into this problem..

 

i also beleave they changed some of the electronics in the half year.
