DS650 dont run right?
#1
Hey guys, I am new to this but need help! I bought my 2000 DS650 from a friend about a year ago. It ran great until about 3 months ago when it got cold out. It dont start unless I pop it. Once it warms up, It starts up when I run it for awhile but once it cools down again, I have to pop it again. I cleaned the carb and it gets fuel. I also changed the air filter. Anyway, I was riding today for about an hour and it ran fine. I went back out later and it started (after I popped it) but it was popping and back firing and wouldnt stay running unless I was on the throttle. As soon as I would let off it would just stall out. When I put it in gear it would dog out pretty bad and just didnt sound right but when I gave it full throttle it took off like is supposed to but when I get to about half throttle it just pops and carries on. Any ideas?

For one do not "pop start" these bikes in the end it will cost you a lot of money in trans or eng parts. How is the diaphragm that operates the slide, if it has a hole in it, it will not raise the needle in turn not letting fuel or air in properly. The other thing to check is valve clearance, if you can get a manual it will help.

I just had my buddy look at the bike and he said about the diaphram needs replaced. Yeah, I want to get a manual just havent had the time. I will try the diaphram and have the valves checked. Will this solve the popping and back firing? It just sucks because I know nothing about these and cannot find parts for these bikes at all! Thanks for the advise and I will keep you posted on the turn-out. Thanks

The other thing is you said it started doing this after it started getting cold out. It could be that you have gone very lean on the bottom end to. You may have to adjust your needle setting and or pilot jet and have that be the end of it.

These are all the exact things I was thinking of to. One other thing is to put new spark plugs in it. That is probably the first thing I would do if it hasen't been done recently.

My DS had sat a while before I bought it and it had some stall out issues with no power from a stand still - couldn't get it to move without it stalling. This was on fresh gas - 93 octane.
I read from the experts here that the screw under the carb and closest to the engine can be pesky with tiny fuel deposits. I removed it (watching for the washer and spring) and sprayed out the hole with carb cleaner a couple times (Also wiped the needle with carb cleaner) - in addition to putting carb cleaner through every jet and hole that I could find. I also found that my floats were set too lean. After cleaning everything and adjusting the floats, it runs great.
