Sportsman 450 won't stay running (Carb maybe?)
#1
All -
I took out my wife's SP450 this weekend for
hopes to use her quad on our ATV outing and
she would NOT start normal. I had the choke all
the way out and I could start it and she would stay
running abit with keeping a hand on the choke for
play when it sound like it would cut out. When I throttle
with CHOKE ON, she would cut out. When I push down
the CHOKE after a while believing it would stay running
it cuts out.
Context: It has sat for about 6 months or so a little
before our WINTER break (ME Bad) but the battery charge
is good (Diags indicated 11.3)
I called my dealer service department and he believed
it is my carb. He suggests a CARB cleaning service.
Thoughts, opinions and suggestions for service?

big R, did you pull the plug and take a look yet? make sure that battery is up to par as they needer bikes need a good charge to keep them running. mine set for the same amount of time and started w/out any issue so unless you have got bad gas or dirt in the tank im guessing the carb should be good, but you never know.

If it is a carb model and sat for any length of time, the pilot jet is most likely clogged. the only way to clean it is remove the carb, remove the pilot jet and clean it and all orifaces thoroughly with cleaner and compressed air. Sometimes a welding tip cleaning wire is necessary. I bought a Trailboss 330 that suffered a similar fate. Carb cleaned, runs like new. Use stabilizer in the fuel. Also, shut off fuel valve and run carb out of gas if your not going to use it for any length of time IE more than a week or so. Ethanol as an oxygenator evaporates fuel quickly and pilot jets being so small clog fast.

yea thats what i mean about bad gas in the lower states. i suppose if that crappy gas is around his area that could happen. i foregt not everyone has the better fuel.

Sorry to hear that news on the 450 "RticKwad"...........did you get the recall service done on the ECM? or do you need to?
Off topic a bit .........Nothing to do with the question you posted!!.......
is the choke (enricher) going back in all the way and not sticking??....There is a rubber cap around the choke lever that when turned will keep it in any position.........Caper........

Hey thanks you all for good input here.
Sandman, you point out all the right things,
and I wouldn't doubt one bit if I have crappy
gas around here, but my Quads and cars have
never had problem before? I usually use the same
gas station. - Not looking forward to a full out
manuall carb cleaning session, but ohh well I
guess its high time.
Caper yes, the choke seems to work fine
and I hadn't noticed any sticking. I should of
used Gas stablizer as she sat. - Would of, should of, could of
I guess? So here I am! As for the ECM, no I hadn't had
that serviced yet either, but on the TO DO list. When
I called the dealer I asked about it and he told me I
can go to any Polaris auth service shop, so I will be hunting
around for something more local in my area. The tech
mentioned its about a 15min service job, does that seem
right?
Stendori, no I didn't pull the plug, I will do that as
first thing to do when I pull her back out after this
weekend. I didn't think it would be the battery since
she kicks right over on CHOKE? But then again another
thing to rule out. I will sit the battery on charge too.
Is there any way out of NOT taking this whole carb apart for
cleaning? Can I put some kind of carb cleaner in the
gas to syphon thru the card and clean out dirt and moisture?
Good thread and thanks for all the help you all!
