Dead Brake Pressure Switch - my FREE solution
#1
Thought I share with everyone about my cheap (FREE) solution if your brake pressure switch (found in 2003 and older models) goes dead...
I spent the last few days trying to troubleshoot why my 2003 400 auto won't start in gear. The brake light comes on when the brake handle is depressed but the starter won't turn over. The bike starts fine in Neutral
So I spent lots of time checking my relays, start in gear diodes and cleaning all possible electrical contacts. The problem was still there. Then in a search in this forum I came across someone else mentioning about a brake pressure switch - found on a 2001 bike. True enough, my 2003 had one of those too and I tested the switch while squeezing the brake handle using an ohm meter and got no continuity. So the brake pressure switch is dead!
It cost probably like Cad$80.00 for the brake pressure switch (part # 0402-306), and if I choose to replace the part, I'll probably need to bleed the brakes ( I had some difficulty bleeding my brakes the last time and it ended up going to the dealer and costing me some $$$). So I decided to bypass the brake pressure switch but still wanted the Start in Gear plus the safety feature. Solution: I unplugged the 2 wires from the brake pressure switch and plugged them into a fuse, basically shorting out the circuit.
The result? Now, when I try to start in gear without pressing the brake, the starter now cranks but engine won't start- GOOD! It only starts when I squeeze either the hand brake or step on the foot brake (a sensor needs to see the brake light coming on in order to start). So the start in gear safety feature is still works and the fix is FREE.
