i have a 2006 honda recon 250 every time i hit a creek or a water hole it cuts off then when i restart it it idles fine. but when i shift it into gear and hit the gas while it has a load it sputters like its out of gas. it will do this for 2 or 3 days after i hit the water then its fine

make sure you dont have any water in the air box or carb. also check to see if all your vent lines are up high so no water can get in them.
what might be happening is your getting the overflow line from the carb in water. that needs to be plugged before you go in water so no water can get in the carb.

WHEN YOU HIT THE GAS IN GEAR AND YOUR DRIVEING DOWN THE TRAIL IS WHAT I MEAN BY LOAD. AT IDLE IT IDLES FINE . AS SOON AS YOU HIT THE GAS IN GEAR IT SPUTTERS AND TRYS TO CUT OFF. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN IT GETS WET THEN AFTER A COUPLE DAYS IT DRIVES LIKE NORMAL.

I seen that happen to my brothers Recon.... he went through some deep water and it started sputtering, had no power, couldn't get out of second gear. Know what fixed it?
He went through the same water hole going in the other direction. Was fine after that.
I swear its true. I can't make this crap up.
If theres water laying in your airbox the motor may not be drawing in enough air to suck it up at idle, even if some of the filter is in the water. When you hit the gas, you increase the air going in, it may begin sucking water at that point, and of course, in a day or two it dries up. Next time check the airbox

It could be several things. My first guess is STEAM is coming up from the engine and then gets suck into the air box messing up the air/fuel ratio. But it shouldn't do it for long. Your might be getting water splashed up on the air filter and it takes a few days to evaporate. I'd also drain the carb bowl. Theres a bolt on the bottom of the carb, unscrew it and the gas will drain out the rubber hose. catch the gas in a can. turn off the gas at the tank first and let it drain till the carb bowl is empty. Those recon's are tough atv's but there not made to ride to deep. Just dont let her die while the muffler is under water cause it will suck it into the engine and you know there rest.
