Default Typhoon 125 (knockoff) for dunes?

Ok, I know I don't really have a real Typhoon. It's a Baja Storm 125. Still seems to be a good little quad for the kids, for no more than we paid for it. It goes just fine in the dirt, and I'm actually surprized at how fast I can turn laps on it. It needed LOTS of LocTite and still needs better shocks, but for a Chinease quad, I can't complain about it's on dirt performance. My question is: Has anybody had one of these things ( Storm, Typhoon, or otherwise ) in the sand? We're getting ready to take a trip out to Lil Sahara and plan on taking the 125 for my 10 yr old Nephew. My main concern is the tiny back tires. It will swing the stock 20" wheels off the 450R, but it naturally takes away power. We've also got some nearly shot 18x11x10 Fast Trekkers, so I may try those. Am I wasting my time? Will this thing get around okay, or will it just try and bury itself? This will be my Nephew and Brother-n-law's virgin trip to the dunes, and I want it to be a good time.

Im not sure but i have a Jet 250 and ive been wondering the same if these Chinese bike will do ok in the sand. Do you have paddles? Im the same on my bike the tires worry me on mine so thats why i havent taken it. But surely considering on buying Paddles.

If you cannot turn reg tires, paddles will be a negative.
We went to Glamis and the youngest was on my LT230 and power was a concern. I opted to run the wore out Maxxis that was on it and it was a good choice. They allowed it to spin and that's what you want. The kid had a ball. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

So paddles may be out of the question? I recently installed 12 tooth for more lower end torque and seems ok but where i go they have sand that is not hard at all. In the dunes is the dirt really soft that you sink if you steep in it or is it some what a little harder but not to hard?

Glamis is soft sand. Hard to walk thru.
IMO you won't need paddles.

So do you think if i buy paddles it would be more effective for the 250

Lightweight, I have had all of my Jetmotos and the Yamoto in the sand a few times. Mostly at Pismo. All of them do good, the bigger ones of course do better. Tire pressure is key...nothing over 2 psi. My 125 Jetmoto has the most trouble and wont pull 3rd gear at all unless its down hill. But still gets around the dunes decently for what it is. I would try the stock tires and then move on to the "18x11x10 Fast Trekkers".

Balanis03, put 2 psi in your tires and youll be fine.

After remembering I had them, I do think the 18" Trekkers would give it a little more floatation. Guess I'll just throw in all three pairs of tires, and try them all when we get there. I'm not sure if the bike has enough guts to make paddles worthwhile. It's a pretty strong running little quad, but sand sucks up so much.

Well, we just made it back from the dunes. Just one thing to say. The 125 stinks in the sand! The stock tires didn't let it go hardly anywhere, so we put the Fast Trekkers on. That helped it out quite a bit, but not enough to make it much fun. It did okay in the flats, but most hills were out of the question. I haven't quite figured out what the problem is. I think it's a combination of things. If I get A-arms with the correct shock location, it will raise of the quad nose up. This will take weight off the front. Second, and if I can find any, front sand tires will float the front better too. Lastly, it either needs more guts or lower gears. Sand sucks up alot of power, and the 125cc engine don't have enough excess power to overcome the loss. Hopefully, I can get at least one of those done before the next time we go. It's a ball to ride in the dirt, I've just got to make it capable in the sand,

I purchased a typhoon 90 for my son and we primarily ride in Gordons Well and Glamis. I've had no trouble with it in the sand. I'm running 18 inch sand gecko paddles in the rear with stock front tires. I replaced his front shocks with a pair of Works shocks, tightened up the rear shock, replaced the stock air filter with a UNI and run only about 4 lbs of air in the tires. The only time he has trouble is when he stops on the face of a hill and tries to take off again. The Works shocks raise the front of the atv up where it needs to be I'm sure that helped too. You should be able to raise the hieght of the front on your atv with the stock shocks. The adjustment is at the base of the shock. Should give you a good inch of hieght.
