Default More ES problems

I have a 2004 Rancher AT(TRX400FA) that will not shift out of first gear in either manual of automatic. The problem started a few weeks back and after letting it sit overnight it worked fine. The next time I went on a ride I didn't have any problems so I thought that it might just be a wet sensor. Last weekend, after riding all day Saturday it started acting up again. Now when I turn the key on the display shows "--" with ESP under those two dashes. That remains on the display for approximately 1-2 seconds and then flashes 12 times before it does it all over again. Long story short, I have a big ride planned for this weekend and I have not been able to locate a service manual at any of the local dealers......they've all told me that it would have to be ordered. Well, I've haven't ordered one yet because it won't be here in time for my ride this weekend. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks is advance...
