Default Dying 400 Xplorer

My '99 Xplorer is dying when I run roads at 40-45mph, it'll go all day in mud and trails, but when I go 3/4 throttle for any time it will die, let it sit awhile, it'll restart. New piston about 70 miles ago, I havce 135 psi cold compression, plug is nice brown, not too lean, no hot lights or loss of coolant, drained and cleaned entire fuel system, new filter, cleaned and adjusted carb, new plug and plug cap, someone said stator? That sound right? Thanks

Possibly venting of the gas tank. Just a thought. It might not hurt to make sure the tank is not getting vapor locked when under a higher demand for gas. I have not experienced this but I would be interested to know what you figure out. Good luck.
