just the starter turns over i believe... I've rebuilt truck starters and tractor starters but this one is set up different. so does the starter not have a bendix spring in it??

there pretty simple starters, if the starter gear and the starter clutch parts are all in good condition then im thinking your starter brushes or plate are worn out, id just pull it out an check it out there pretty simple

I'm a good mechanic but what is going to be involved in replacing the starter clutch and should i assume a hour or a couple of hours to repair.

You have to have the correct flywheel puller to replace the starter clutch. Is it going ka-clank, ca-klank, ca-klank while trying to start? IF so then it's def. the starter clutch.
