700 X2 Polaris Questions
#1
I have a two issues with my 2008 700 X2.
1) Does anyone have a lot of problems with heat out of this machine? It pretty much burns my right leg along the muffler even though it has a guard over the muffler pipe. I have problems with my kids on the machine burning their leg and melting their shoes. I am concerned that in the winter, when wearing a snowmobile suit it will melt the suit. Has anyone put a guard over this or figured out a way to get around this problem?
2) Does anyone have a clicking noise in their engine when idling? I do not notice it when running, but when idling it sounds like the lifters clicking. My dealer told me this is normal? Anyone else??

Check this out: eBay heat shield The other issue sounds like metal cooling.

I took a look at this, has anyone used that for a heat shield? I also see a new post that talks about this issue as well. Has anyone used either of them. I'm really getting sick of stuff melting against it!
The other noise is definately something in the engine. Like I said it sounds like lifters, but I was told they are now electronic, self adjusting, lifters and they can't be adjusted. They also told me that it is normal for Polaris machines to have that noise when idling!!

I have the same ATV and yes it is HOT on the leg, and the steem from water holes is 2 fold. My issue with the blanket one would be holding to much heat in and around the eng compartment and melting other things. If you get this and it helps let us know as I will be geting one also!!! Nice find!

Yep, have (had) this same problem. I went to Home Depot and got some 6" wide roll of chimney flashing. It is just a roll of metal. I used some tin snips and cut off a piece to block out the front half of the opening where all the heat is coming from. It still lets air through the rest of the opening, but shields you from the heat on your leg at the front. Oh, by the way, I simply attached it on the inside of the black plastic fairing piece with duct tape. It works like a charm and I no longer have the hot leg syndrome! The thermotec wrap is good to wrap a header on a car, but I wouldn't use it on my ATV. It keeps too much heat in the pipe and only makes things hotter down the line. You can also get heat shield material from a speed shop like SummitRacing.com or Jegs.com that has some fiberglass sandwiched between two layers of foil. It would work fine, but it sure costs more than the little roll of flashing. And, if you don't like your placement, or size of the heat deflector, you can always use the tin snips again and design a little different piece.
I live in Arizona where it is already too hot, and the added heat on my leg was just too much. I wear pants and it's okay. My son wears shorts and he likes it so much that he put a similar shield on his Sportsman too. Have fun!!
