Default 2003 Polaris Predator 90 motor trouble

I just bought my son a 2003 Polaris Predator 90. Ran fine when we bought it and that night went on a 5-6 miles trip threw the woods lots of power went up and down hills with no problem.

It seamed to smoke a little more then what I thought it should even for a 2-stroke. It also had a little sputter to it. But had great power.

The next day he road it for couple hours around the house no trouble. Then went to go up on the hill. it just started to die no power it would idle but when you pushed in the throttle it would just bog down and not go. Bought 2 new plugs put the fist one in and it took off ran fine for 5min then just went back to the same thing. Took that plug and noticed it was pretty wet. Put other plug in and it did the same thing wet after it came out. I have been reading some forums and found out about some problems Polaris has but not sure were to start if any one has any ides let me no ...Thanks

Welcome to the forum Greenie. If the plugs are wet then it must be running REALLY rich. I don't know why it would do that all of a sudden, but check to see if the air filter is plugged full of dirt.

Do you have the proper heat range plugs in there?
Also check the plug gap
Most say they are pre-set gap ....but it will never hurt to double check!
........Caper........

I took the air filter out and found some water in the box and filter. Cleaned it out and the filter then I took the cover off the stator it was pretty dirty did not take the fly wheel off but used the air compressor to clean it out good. How do you check the stator?

Started back up and seem to run good. Boy rode up the field lots of power then it would just die .He could start it back up and run pretty good back down. Tried adjusting the carb but not sure the proper setting? But it would surge up then down at most any turn in or out of and started loosing power. I think I will have to take the carb off and clean it out?

The plug that was in it was a NKG BPR6HS the book at the auto store called for a NKG BPR7HS. What is the best one to use the book they had was for ATVS's and listed the 90 predator..

Thanks

From what I hear there's no such thing as a pre-gapped plug, so you have to check them and adjust as necessary. Ask the dealer which plug to use.

Normally BPR7HS plug, but can use BPR6HS if not running WOT all the time. Should be around 1 to1 3/8 turn out. Could be water contaminated fuel in tank, make sure to drain and flush tank, lines and carb, If continues to die after this, stator could be shorting out or getting hot and loosing compression. Have also had water in fuel before, would run good until you suck up water from bottom of carb, this is where it settles. Good luck.
