Default 2005 Sportsman 700 Twin Problem

I just bought a used 2005 sportsman 700 not EFI and if you take off full throttle the motor surges. I can let off some and gradually increase speed with no problem. It does the same as it is designed to do in the reverse gear if you don't hold in the button. Is this a safety feature that the 400 and 500HO don't have or is there some problem I need to look for? I have already changed the fuel filter and put a tank of 93 octane in it so I don't know if it's starving for gas or it's designed that way. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Welcome to the forum Mine1. Since you already changed the fuel filter, my next guess would be something is wrong with the carb. Not sure what. The experts will be here soon, so be patient.

Have had water contaminated machines exhibit same symptoms. Runs good slowly, full throttle sucking up water since water settles at bottom of tank and carb. Just a thought! If you are describing over ride button, when pressing should have FULL power in reverse gear and not limiting/cuting out. Also can disconnect fuel line from carb, hold line in ratio cup or clear glass, crank engine to see if fuel pumping, let fuel settle in glass,if water present will show at bottom. Can also pull up carb drain line, open valve, drain into clear container to see if water present. Good luck PS also plugs? have you checked/changed? Last, but not least belt stretch/slipping? A lot to check, but can be any of these or NONE of these! Good Luck, let us know.

Default 2005 Sportsman 700 Twin Problem

I'm not sure but on third time out problem has seened to be going away. I guess it maybe had trash or water in it and maybe getting it out. I notice another problem though. Last 2 times out, doing mostly 20-30 mph and after 45 min. to 1 hour the display starts flashing HOT. After the first time I went home and opened the cap to find it full of very clean and green radiator fluid. I then drained the radiator, blew air in the hoses which seemed to be clear, and then refilled system with new prestone 50/50 mixture. I then cranked it up to warm up without cap on and looked down neck. I could see a stream of fluid coming in and I assumed the thermostat had opened and pump was good. I topped it off and filled the over flow bottle. I took it out again today and once again had same thing after 45 minutes to 1 hour. I have noticed that the fan does come on and seems to be fine. What could this be, radiator cap, thermostat, water pump? Thanks for the help guys!

Mud clogged radiator. Take it out & clean it. You probably do not see anything on front but most likely the back is clogged.

Good advise from upnort, pulled out one on a 03 700 sportsman last week and weighed about 20 pounds without any coolant! mud caked at rear not allowing air to draw through!

wash out radiator with hose pressure. If you use a pressure washer it could fold over the fins which will also restrict airflow
