You must have had a torn CV boot and never noticed. Dirt will get inside and ruin the bearing and axle. I just had a CV boot replaced on my Sportsman by the dealership. It cost about $130. They said if I continued to ride with it torn and got a bunch of dirt inside I could have added another $230 for axle and bearing. One of the questions they asked was "is it clanking or clattering?"
Sounds like you may have just bought a new axle, bearing and boot.
