Default HELP, 03 Wolverine needs a lower gear!

Hey All,

I picked up a 03 Wolverine about a month ago. Rode it for about a week and sent it off to my local Yamaha dealer for repairs, it took about 2 weeks for me to get it back. They flushed the oil, plug, put a new rubber boot on between the carb and the intake and some other issues I had with it. Thy said it was one of the best cold starting Wolverine/Warriors they've worked on.

I was hoping there was another problem but they claim it runs fine.

My problem is (at least I think it a problem), it doesn't have enough power in first gear. Most of the time it will bog down with it throttled to the max instead of spinning the tires.

I think a 350 should be able to do some light farm work and climb a hill in the woods without getting stuck IN FRONT of a small log (Not on it), which seems to be my biggest problem and its put me in some hairy situations already.

Now being its shaft driven I know my options are somewhat limited here (This is one time I wish I did have a sprocket to swap out). I dont want to jet it and a T4 pipe is not a good option neither since I live in an are where noise could be a factor.

The back and front tires have 12" rims with some aftermarket big Carlisle skins on them. Basically the Front and back tires are the same size.

I don't care too much If I loose some of the top end speed. I'm looking for lower end power. It looks like the rev limiter is backed out all the way so I've come here for some Ideas.

Should I put smaller tires on? Should I tinker with the air box? I really need some feed back on this cuz I'm used to 2 wheel drv 4 wheelers and YZ's. I wanted this wolverine for some 4 wheel off roading.

Today I got suck on 2 logs (Not huge ones) about 16" in diameter going uphill very, very slightly. It wouldn't spin until I got off of it and rocked it back and forth. I'm not a little guy, I'm over 6' and around 190 lbs (But c'mon Ive had an RM 125 kick my a$$).

Is it normal for it to have that little amount of torque being it's an all wheel (Slip differential) Drive ATV?

Any Ideas would be great as I really want to keep this machine. I even got a sweet snow plow and winch with the sale.

Thanks ahead of time guys..

Wade in PA...

What tire size do you have on? Maybe they are too big.
If you don't want to change pipe, you can put a better aftermarket high flow air filter, as it can help you a litle. You can also change the clutch spring by something harder as they will engage at higher RPM helping you to turn tires at low speed. Finaly you can get a better cam, such as the one that webcamshats sells, they have one that is suposed to give you more torque.

good luck.

The tires are Carlisle Badlands XTR. The backs are AT 270/60 R12. The fronts are AT 205/80 R12. These are the first things that came to my mind as this is a simple fix with lower end results, but..... I lose ground clearance.

Would you keep these tires or go smaller?

No way am I putting a new cam in this beast. My wife already wants another reason to skin me after coming home with it and the trip it took to the Yamaha Dealer. Money for my toys really isn't an issue with me but it is with her, and everyone here that's married can relate

Think the Air Filter can get the RPMs up quicker in first? Which do you suggest and what better flow pipe will fit this beast that comes somewhat quiet with a good spark arrestor?

Also, did the 350 warriors and Wolverines come stock with this lack of low end quickness? I think this is the same block as the warriors anyhow.

2 things come to mind, the Badlands, a great tire, are pretty heavy for that size motor, and looking at the numbers, are the tires different diameters? with a full time 4wd system,if you run different size front and back, the drivetrain will bind up on hardpack dirt , taking away a lot of power, and possibly damaging the differential gears. I may be a bit slow, but what do those numbers translate to in plain sizes? Like are they 23", 24", 25" ??? Let us know, could be the former owner didn't know much about tires and threw on whatever looked good.

If i'm nor wrong they are about the same height as 25" tires, taller than the 23" that comes stock but not too much to cause the problems he is having...

A high flow air filter in many cases helps the engine even at idle so why it shouldn't help a little at low RPMs, i'm not saying it will solve your problems, but a UNI filter is about 30 bucks and is better than stock.

As far as the cam change, yeah, it is not cheap, they are listed at US$123 plus the valve srings at US$95 so total is US$218, that's why i don't have it for now....but it's not so much diference if you compare it to changing 4 tires and loose ground clearance.

joaquin's right...

The Backs are 25's and the fronts are somewhere around 24 1/2's. The Width is the major difference.

Which Air Filter will give me better lower end HP, a UNI filter or a K&N?
