Polaris Sportsman Charging
#1
A while back I was posting about my Polaris Charging system not working correctly. After a ton of help I finally got around to checking out the stator. Here is what I found.
I unplugged the stator and in my redneck ways I tested the voltage with a test light (I didnt have a volt meter available tonight). With the tab down starting from the left I had the following.
1. Yellow wire. Bright light
2. Yellow wire. No light even revving up motor
3. Yellow wire. Dim light, but it did get brighter when I revved the motor
4. Brown wire. No light
Is it stator replacement time? What are your thoughts on getting one rewound? Do they last? What should I expect to pay to have a stator rewound?

Really need ohm meter to check resistance, also to see if ANY yellow wire shorting to ground. BROWN wire is ground. Will try to remember to get specs. Also are all leads to reg/rectifier connected? Have the most charging problems with the reg/rectifier or batteries not holding charge, not the stator,BUT on electrical anything possible! Is there charging at battery,14-14.5 volts?

"On electrical anything possible!"
Can I get an Amen, Brothers and Sisters?
I HATE electrical problems. The intermittent ones can drive you to drink.

i agree w/ all above and would think it would be more the recifier then the stator but anything is possiable. you will need the ohm specs as he mentioned. good luck.

All the leads look to be connected. I was testing from the stator with it unplugged. According to the voltage readout on the quad it doesnt appear to be charging very much. It reads about 12.5v with stator connected and 11.8 without.
I have taken the battery to 3 different places and had it tested ( I kept hoping one would say it was bad)
I will pick up a OHM meter today and check it out tonight. What is the best way of testing the stator, and the reg/rectifier. I am really hoping the stator isnt bad. That is pricy and hard to find someone who can rewind one in less than a couple weeks.
THANKS!!!!!

NEED to know year model as specs do differ a little year to year. ONE way with out a manual is to check that ALL yellows show about same resistance between EACH other(Plus or minus about 20%) and NO shorts to ground on any wire! IF shows this,JUST order reg/rectifier! Keep us posted Good luck

OK. I put a ohm meter on the male plug the stator plugs into that runs into a wiring housing that in turn runs up front. I am far from a tech guy but here is what I found. the Middle Yellow wire I am getting current to when I touch the ground. So- that gives me hope there is a ground on that wire correct?
Now my question is. This housing plugs into a larger black box that is under the headlight. Would that be the reg/rectifier?
I have inspected the wires going up to that point and everything looks ok. If that device is bad would that possibly short a wire?
Thanks... you guys are awesome!!!!

Ok. I was wrong. That harness goes to what I think is the ECM. It is right in front of the radiator on my quad. (it is a 07 Sportsman 500 EFI) I disconnect the plug to the ECM and the short goes away. Thoughts??? Is the ECM bad?

Ok I finally went out and bought a good multimeter and here is what I found testing at the stator with it unplugged
Crossing Ground to Yellow
Yellow #1: 13.3
Yellow #2: .833
Yellow #3: 3.08
Testing between Yellow wires
Yellow #1 to Yellow #2 14.8 ACV
Yellow #1 to Yellow #3 15.3 ACV
Yellow #2 to Yellow #3 2.9 ACV
I think testing between yellow wires is the answer. Time to get a stator rewound? I think I was incorrect about one of the yellow wires being grounded. I bought a new meter and tested continuity and I didnt have anything between that wire and the ground.
Thanks a bunch for your help!
