Default 2004 Sportsman over heating

All,

I'm sorry if this question has been answered before. I did search and was a bit confused by posts claiming carb models had ECM modules, etc so I decided to go with a new post.

Here's the situation:
- ATV would run fine for hours and I would clean up and park it
- Next day- no power, no panel, nothing
- charge the battery (new battery)
- Engine would start but the radiator fan would continue to run and flash Hot on panel
- Knowing it couldn't be overheating (it was about 10 deg F), I ran it for a bit and it stopped flashing and seemed fine
- After clean up and storing over night, it was ground hog day! Same thing, no power.
- Battery didn't seem to be charging so I bought a new one
- After charging properly, Ground hog day again! Flashes hot

All other electrical seems to be working but I'm not sure what all to test. This description sounded just like another post (http://forums.atvconnection.co...R_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear) but this guy seems to have EFI and I don't.

Searches on CDI didn't seem to match the problems I'm having.

Please help! I'm hoping to go riding up in NH this weekend and I don't want to have this thing leave me stranded.

Thanks for any and all help!

Jim

ECM controls charging and fan operation. If hot light comes on and fan AND not hot, plus not keeping battery charged, then ecm faulty whether on the recall list or not! I've replaced several that are not on the recall list that were faulty.

it does sound like a ECM issue. there is a list somewhere that lets you check vin # to see if your machine is qualified for the recall.
caper might chime in. he has had a few run ins with bad ECM modules.

What you described is exactly what I'm experiencing. The fan runs, flashes hot but it hasn't been running for hours/days. Also, the fan keeps running after the engine is shut off. How simple is it to replace the ECM and where do I find it on this model? Is it located on the front under the panel that's located under the front rack? My Haynes manual doesn't give me any guidance on this.

Thanks and my apologies for the newb questions;o)

Black finned module below headlight in access panel, should supercede to newer module.

Thanks old polaris tech! That was the exact problem. I contacted my local Polaris dealer and I found out that my quad was even included in the recall lists.
