I have a 2002 ds 650 ,it starts up and runs rough at idle,runs better with the lights on and runs perfect when the fan comes on??? I am really confused!! Thanks for any help

 

AZSAND can do this one he is up to date with this wiring on the ds. i would start by grounding the motor first and welcome aboard.

Wow that is wierd for sure the only thing that comes to mind is the fan and lights are causing the regulator to ecite the the staor creating better voltage.i would check this by putting the bike on a small charge maybe 5-10 anps start the bike if it runs good at idle then. you know its an exciter problem and im unfamilar with this problem but just for the kicks i would check all three major ground points i have never seen a ground do this but in theory it could.what is your voltage @ idle and then what is your voltage once you turn on your lights and the fan comes on??? the ds will run like crap with low voltage and the motor for some reason dose not sound like it alone can draw the amount of amps to excite the stator which would speak good for your coil and cdi effiecentcy i had a heck of a time with that word this am?? any way's check those out and let us know.also try just raising your idle a tad maybe 1-200 rpm see if it excites at start up then.

 

It does run better with a battery charger ! Would that be a reguator issue? Update/ found broken ground runs better!! Thanks Again
