Default Xplorer 400 Grey OOZE outside motor

Hey there!

Went on a long ride yesterday. At one point, went through deep water and about 20 minutes later, going 35 MPH, it starts to act like it is running out of gas.

The only way to get it home was to go slow and hold the choke on 1/4 and it would run OK.

When I got back to camp, I was panicked by the sight of grey, slippery ooze all over the left side of the motor. It looked as if it was running down the bottom of the belt cover vent and dripping all over the left side of the motor.

We trailered them home. When I first started it, it acted the same- needed choke. After about 15 seconds on gently revving it and listening, it ran FINE!!!!1

I have not had the chance to test the fan yet. I assume it got burned up while under water. Or maybe there was a failure internally and the coolant was not circulating and the fan never came on.

OK- so no idea how to trouble shoot this.

What should I look for?

Why would it be oozing crap out of the belt cover breather, running like crap- then fine?

I bet it gets worse when it gets hot again.

I am crazy good at working on stuff. Please advise where to start?

Check the counter balance oil.You could have filled it with water and pushed the oil out

I think ftwflh is right as usual. He really knows the 400s. Check all the fluids and see if water is in any of them. A lot of people don't remember the counter balancer.
