I've got a Lowrance Expedtion C with a topograpic chip and Lakemaster chip for fishing. Not the cheapest but a great GPS.

I have an old Garmin, and if I bought a new GPS it would be another Garmin. I have a RAM mount for it that goes on the handlebars. I highly recommend the RAM mounts.

As others said Garmin is the only way to go. I have the 60csx which is great for use on the atv. Buy the ram mount also for whatever unit you decide to get. Mounts right to your handlebar. Have had mine for a couple years now and the gps unit has never come out. Used it when we went to Utah and it was great. They have come down in price since I bought mine. A little pricey but well worth it and it has a color screen. Any other questions let me know.

Garmin E-trex. cheap (relatively) and you can get more detailed maps for your area.

I have the e-trex as well but am moving up to the Garmin Colorado 400T seems to be allot better unit if you ride in the woods (better reception) and it had 3D mapping!

Go with the Garmin but consider a larger screen than the etrex. I use a Garmin 76csx and the larger screen is diffently a bonus. The wife uses a etrex legend for geocaching and really likes it except for the small screen. The 70 series and the 60 series have really came down in price comprable to the etrex series.

As far as ease of use I haven't seen any that are "easy" you have to understand how they work to actually get the most out of them. The best thing to do is to really spend some time using them and especially with some one familiar with the model you get.

After you get them figured out you'll find yourself lost without it.

Ditto to Jumbo's post - Garmin and RAM mount.

I recommend the 76Csx. Yes, it is probably a little more than you want to spend, but for me it was the best compromise between cost and function. Has a fairly large color screen, takes a micro-SD card so you can load street maps - topos - and marine charts.

If you absolutely cannot spring for the 76Csx, then I would go for the E-trex. But the screen will not be easily read out on the trail - IMO
