Garmin is definately a good unit but if you will ever use it for fishing as well the Lowrance is a better unit. Also, a friend has an Etrex and it does not work nearly as well as the Lowrance in heavy cover. It spends a lot more time trying to locate Sattelites. For the $ the Etrex a good unit.

The 76Csx works quite well in cover. As a matter of fact I was using the 76Csx on the bridge on a Navy ship (constructed of steel). The Captain couldn't believe I was maintaining satellites inside the steel bridge.

Whatever you choose between the Garmin line (E-trex, 76Csx )or Lowrance they are all good. For the most part when you pay more you get more features. The higher end have more channels and bells and whistles. But if you want just a basic GPS with tracking mode, the E-trex may be all you need. Good Luck.

yup - colorado (and oregon) 400T are nice units. Price has come down quite a bit since I bought my 76Csx.

No problem! Another nice thing on the 400t is that if you are into Geocaching the caches are automaticaly donloded to the GPS unit!

I have an Etrex legend. DON"T GET ONE!
The screen is small and the buttons are impossible as well that silly little cursor. It was made for hiking with one hand and no gloves on.
Good thread. I'm looking to upgrade my gps. I like the Oregon 400 but it isn't cheap.
