Default 04 rubicon esp LCD flashing

just bought a used 04 rubicon. took it out for a ride on the lake today and all went well. when i reached the other side my sisters quad got stuck so i turned around and was going to back up to her and give it a pull. switched into reverse but when i gave it gas to backup the engine would run extremely rough and sputter. could hardly move.. tried it in forward and it was fine.. the lights in the LCD were flashing, D1, D2 ESP, all were flashing.... turned off the bike and waited a bit. started it back up and it was fine.

on the way back to our truck while i was driving the lights on the LCD started to flash again! also this time i noticed the bike was riding in a lower gear and would not shift to a higher gear. was a bit worried now so i drove a bit further then stopped and took a long break. when we started again all was fine and had no more problems the rest of the way back. i drive the bike in D1 always so far.

will mention there was lots of snow on the lake, we were driving on a snowmachine trail which was pretty packed down but it still gave us some trouble, bikes were not working very hard though.

is this a sign of some sensor problem? a selonide that might need changing? i did do some searching on here but wanted to ask to see if anyone had the same problem.
i don't have a repair manual yet for this bike so any information you have will be helpfull.
also, any good place online that i can order a good repair manual? there is no Honda dealer locally wher i live.

thanks guys! will post a pic of my bike shortly!!

Joe

You have to count the number of flashes ..

thanks for the quick reply!!

i think when this happened it flashed repeatidly..... never stopped flashing till i turned the key off. but if ( and when ) this happens again, i will count and see how many times it flashes.

will this do any damage to the bike?
i mean, i want this fixed asap, but could this cause any damage?
atv's have really changed since i was last on one, last one i owned was a 93 honda 350 4X4 and i dont think it had any flashing LCD lights/codes lol!

thanks for the help.

The flashing is a problem code .. It will flash 1-12 flashes then pause 2 seconds then repeat .. It can store 2 problem codes so you should count several times..

tried to do the code retrival but must not have done it right. will read it over again and try again tomorrow.

did drive the bike today, the error did not show up at all. i did check alot of the connections and where the wires connect to some of the sensors. perhaps one of them might not have been making a good contact.

there was another small problem, the temp light in the LCD dash came on a few times today. it would come on for a few seconds then go back off. i stopped the bike and could hear the cooling fan running, had lots of coolant in the res bottle, and the engine did not feel overly warm.

this bike has high milage, possible bad temp sensor?

will try again tomorrow to get the stored codes and will post back

i managed to get the code!!!
it flashed 6 times, then paused, then 6 again.

so by the instructions i found, it has something to do with the angle sensor. is there anything else that it could be? maybe poor connection?
how much does one of these sensors cost?

i will do some more searches here on the forums in the meanwhile

This happened to me the other day, and then my wife just called me from the woods saying that it was flashing again....won't shift or go above 11mph and sputters in reverse (2001 Rubicon). I'll count the flashed when she gets back in a few minutes.....where did you look up the codes???

Update:

Wife got back....display flashing a consistant quick flash with no pause at all. I tried pulling a code from reading somewhere else here about turning the key on while holding the up and down shift button simultaniously, then release, then press again to get the flashes....that didn't work either.

I reset the angle switch by holding up/down shift, turning on key, release up/down, then press up, down, up; then press throttle in and release. I heard it actuate, then the display went constant. I turned the key off, back on and started it up. No flashing! I ran it about 2 miles with no problem and shut it down to check things out. When I turned the key back on to start, the flashing was back and I could not reset it.

I noticed a small oil leak on the fwd part of the engine up high directly above the oil dipstick.

Any ideas? Oil level seems fine, but the leak bothers me. I'm about to tear her down to fix the leak, but don't know if this is causing the flashing lights, limited speeds (won't shift or go above 10mph), and backfiring while backing up.

Help!?
